I arrived in Salzburg, home of The Sound of Music, at 3:00 and immediately began to explore the city. It is very small, but the scenery surrounding Salzburg is so beautiful. It is the boarder of the Alps. To the east--back towards Vienna--everything is flat, but to the west are breathtaking snowcapped peaks. And I mean breathtaking. Sometimes I would encounter a view so beautiful that I would forget to breath.
Motzart was born in Salzburg, and I saw his birthplace. His face is everywhere--been spray-painted on walls.
Salzburg castle is also remarkable. One of the most beautifully situated I have ever seen. The view to the mountains made me want to cry. I'm quite bummed that I'm not going to do the Haute Route hike in Switzerland. Perhaps I can day trip from Geneva.
After exploring Salzburg I went back to the hostek and watched the Sound of Music with a big group of people and enjoyed a very good beer.
Monday morning I went on another gorgeous hike and then took the train 7 hours to Milan. My train went straight through the alps and I feasted and feasted on the beauty. Sometimes the mountains were so tall I thought they were the sky because I couldn't see the tops from the train window.
I went on the Sound of Music tour in 1994! It was a tourist trap, but fun.
