Riga, Latvia

On Wednesday I caught a 10 am bus to Riga, about a 5 hour drive. It was now that I got to see just how unpopulated these countries are. Estonia has 1.6 million people and most of them are in Tallinn. We drove for hours through beautiful snowy forests.

At 2:30 I arrived in Riga and I went to the market. On ny flight to Dublin I had lost one of my water bottles and was looking for a Soviet army canteen both as a soveniers and a replacement. I looked and looked but didn't have any luck. I could have bought ancient helmets, swords or even an officers pistol for $30 but no canteen. So I wandered around the city until it was dark and then went to the hostel and cooked myself a yummy dinner. I've got to say that after Tallinn, Riga is a let down. Its more modernized and much larger so the gems are farther apart and harder to find. It is also the party capitol of Europe and everywhere you look there are bars. I was woken up almost every hour during the night by drunk people returning to my 16-bed dorm and laughing and talking like imbeciles. A couple guys came in and said good night to me while I was making breakfast.

Thursday morning I finally had some luck and found a canteen, a cool army flask with an etching of Stalin and an old war model in a flea market. Then I bopped around until it was time for the bus to Vilnius. I shake the Rigan dust from my sandles.

As you may have noticed, I've discovered how to include more pictures with the mobile app! So here are some pictures of Riga, but also a few other pictures from the past weeks.
